That's the title of a new document the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center posted today.

Linked via the Read prompt below this post, this involves several steps. Each of these has their own steps-with-steps.

I'll tell you the major steps for Windows XP. Follow the link I just mentioned for Windows ME or 98 machines.

1. Close BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
2. Open the Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select BlackBerry Desktop Software and click Change/Remove.
4. On the InstallShield Wizard window, click the Remove option, followed by Next.
5. On the Confirm Uninstall window, click OK.
6. On the InstallShield Wizard window, click Finish.

Follow along, now:

Task 2 - Delete the Research In Motion folders from the registry

To delete the Research In Motion folders, complete the following steps:
Click Start>Run.
Type Regedit, then click OK.
In the Registry Editor, delete the Research In Motion folder located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\
Delete the Research In Motion folder located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
Note: This key will not be present if you are removing BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.0.

Remove the BlackBerry Desktop Software folder under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall'

Leave the Registry Editor open to complete the next task.

Task 3 - Delete the Pumatech or Pumatech Technology key from the registry (if present)

Pumatech shared folders only exist in the registry for BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.0.1 and earlier.

To delete the Pumatech and or Puma Technology key folders, complete the following steps:
In the Registry Editor, delete the Puma Technology folder located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\
Delete the Pumatech key folder located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
Close the Registry Editor.

Task 4 - Delete the Research In Motion folders from your hard drive

To delete the Research In Motion folder, complete the procedure that corresponds with the Windows operating system you have installed on your computer.
For Windows 2000 or XP
Open Windows Explorer.
Delete the Research In Motion folder in C:\Program Files\

Delete the Research In Motion folder in C:\Program Files\Common Files (if present).
Delete the Research In Motion folder in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\

Note: If you are unable to see the Application Data folder, it might be a hidden system folder. See the Additional Information section of this article for instructions on how to display hidden files and folders.

If you were running BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.0 Service Pack 1, delete the BlackBerry Desktop folder in C:\Documents and Settings\<user names>\Application Data\.

Task 5 - Delete the Pumatech folder from your hard drive (if present)

To delete the Pumatech folder, complete the procedure that corresponds with the desktop software version you have installed on your computer.
If you are running BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.0 Service Pack 1 or later, delete the Pumatech Desktop Setup folder located in C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\
If you are running a version of BlackBerry Desktop Software earlier than 4.0.1, delete the Pumatech Shared folder located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\


Task 6 - Restart the computer

The desktop software should now be fully uninstalled. Restart the computer to make sure that all background processes are cleared from system memory.

So maybe today's the day you want to perform what is called a "knife-edge cutover" of BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 or 4.1 from one computer to another.

"Oh, joy," you say to yourself.

But you're in luck, because the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has just posted a How-To document that walks you through the process. I've linked to this document below this post.

Because this is fairly detailed stuff I will refer you to the Document for the detailed, well, deets.

But if you want a top-level view of the procedure involved, I'll tell you there are five general steps involved.

These are:

1. Gather BlackBerry Enterprise Server Information.
2. Ensure permissions are correctly configured.
3. Move the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
4. Stop the BlackBerry services.
5. Install the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

On the BlackBerry section of Experts-Exchange, one of the most-read thread these days is "BlackBerry Enterprise Server-Email Not Synching Properly In Inbox." Link below.

Started by NTJOCK, the thread involves two issues. One, that synchro happens too quickly, causing spam to replicate to the BlackBerry which requires a "synch now" to clear it.

The second issue is way more complicated, I promise you that.

"I have many rules running on my mailbox at the client and server level," NTJOCK writes. "They process a variety of email that we get from vendors and systems. I probably get 200 emails a day and only 40 of them require me to read them. The other 160 are some combination of status updates for orders, confirmations, faxes, system messages, etc. I have rules setup to move these to the right folders, forward them when appropriate, or just flat delete them."

Would this be so easy.

"The problem is that they get replicated out to my blackberry before the rule on the client 'gets'them," NTJOCK explains. "They do get moved to the right folder (usually), but after they are moved they "stay" on the BB. This is really frustrating because I have 160 msgs/day of clutter on my PDA."

Ace Experts-Exchange expert garycutri to the rescue.

"If an email is moved from the inbox to a public folder the BE will not be able to track that email hence (hey Gary is from Australia where they say "hence") the changes aren't applied to the device," he writes. "As another example if you delete an email and empty the recycle bin before the device has a change to reconcile the BES will loose track of that email and it won't be removed from the device.

"With all the spam filter I use on Exchange they prevent the spam email from hitting the exchange server so there is never an issue with the device receiving filter spam," Gary points out. "You can add a blacklist to exchange so you ensure the spam never reaches the server. I normally use the free list from www.spamhaus.org."

Then Gary adds this important piece of advice: "When you set rules to automatically move email ensure that the folder you are moving them too is a sub folder of the inbox otherwise the BES can't track the email and hence can't reconcile the changes to the handheld."

The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has just posted a new support document entitled Unable to integrate a POP3 email account after changing messaging and collaboration servers.

This happens when, after messaging servers are changed, a BlackBerry device user working with BlackBerry Internet Service can't integrate or receive emails from a POP3 email account.

The document tells us that when a mail server is changed, it takes a few days for the DNS (Domain Name System) servers to update the IP (Internet Protocol) address.

Rather than just have you wait, this document (linked below) provides a five-step resolution.

I'm just about to tell you what those steps are.

1. Check with the system administrator to locate the IP address of the messaging server.
2. Log in to the BlackBerry Internet Service to add your email account.
3. Type your email address but use an incorrect password. Using the incorrect password will take you to an advanced integration screen.
4. Select I will provide the settings from the POP/IMAP section of the advanced settings.
5. Complete the information requested on the page using the IP address for the server and make sure to update your password to the correct password.
   

While the instructions I cited for removing the "Sent from my BlackBerry Wireless Handheld" tagline does not work on the Pearl, BBHub reader and ardent ham radio guy David Kozinn provides this solution for performing that action on the BlackBerry Pearl.

"On the Pearl, go into the messages list, and press the menu key (the one to the left of the trackball)," David advises. "Scroll down to and select "Options," then "Email Settings" and make sure that "Use Auto Signature" is set to "Yes." You'll then be able to change your signature.

But then David adds an important point.

"Note that this procedure applies if you are using a corporate BES server," he writes. "If you\'re using a BIS server (i.e., you have an email address like someone@carrier.blackberry.net), you have to change the setting on their website."

I'm writing this post not out of some grand revelation, but because this common question has surfaced on the forums again.

This time it is the BlackBerry section of the Howard Forums.

"Can I have Desktop Manager (shown above) on two computers and use the same BB 7103e on each (not at the same time)," asks ScottPV. "I currently use the BB as a EVDO modem and data sync on one laptop and want to also use it on my Samsung Q1 (XP handtop)."

ScottPV then clarifies that he really only wants to use the 7130e on the Q1 as a modem.

"I have never been able to get the 7103e to work as a modem on my laptop without Desktop Manager and I assume the same will be true for the Q."

Well, ScottPV, you are in good luck.

"This will work without any issues," writes your fellow HowardFourms Member jase88.

"As jase88 stated it will work," Synncere writes sincerely." I have the desktop manager program installed on both my home and work computer and I have never once had any issues using my BlackBerry w/ either.

In a popular Experts-Exchange BlackBerry article entitled BlackBerry wireless backup restore (link below), MisUszatek asks if this is possible via BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

We have a running BES 4.1 with wireless backup enabled for all the users," MisUszatek writes. "Where and how can I manage it? I want to see what is being backed up, when and where. How do I do the partial restore on the same handheld or a full restore on the replacement phone? "

Well, hate to break this to you on the cusp of New Year's Eve, but what you are asking for isn't the easiest.

In fact, you have to stick to a BlackBerryForums thread on this very subject.

Entitled Workflow: Activate a BlackBerry device wirelessly, the thread advises you to do so by performing the following steps:

1. The user receives or purchases a new BlackBerry device. The user receives or purchases a new BlackBerry device and contacts the IT department to activate it.

2. The administrator creates a password. The administrator uses the BlackBerry Manager to create a temporary wireless enterprise activation password for the user account and communicates that password to the user. The password applies to the user account only. The password is no longer valid if any of the following events occur:

o. the BlackBerry Enterprise Server successfully activates a BlackBerry device on the account using the password
o. five consecutive unsuccessful activation attempts are made on the account
o. user fails to activate a BlackBerry device within the expiry window

3. The user initiates a wireless enterprise activation. The user opens the enterprise activation application on the BlackBerry device and types the appropriate corporate email address and wireless enterprise activation password.

4. The BlackBerry device sends an activation request. The BlackBerry device sends an activation request message to the corporate email account. The message contains information about the BlackBerry device, such as routing information and the BlackBerry device activation public keys.

5. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends an activation response. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the BlackBerry device an activation response that contains routing information about the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the public keys for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

6. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry device establish and confirm encryption keys. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry device establish a master encryption key. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry device confirm their knowledge of the master key to one another. If key confirmation succeeds, the activation proceeds and further communication is encrypted.

7. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the IT policy. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the IT policy. If the BlackBerry device cannot accept the IT policy, as a security measure, the activation does not complete.

8. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends service books. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the appropriate service books (for example, messaging service book, wireless calendar service book, browser service book, and other service books) to the BlackBerry device. The user can now send messages from and receive messages on the BlackBerry device.

9. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends data. If the user is configured for wireless PIM synchronization and wireless backup and wireless calendar synchronization is enabled, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends data to the BlackBerry device, including the following information:

o. calendar entries
o. address book entries
o. tasks
o. memos
o. messages
o. existing BlackBerry device options (if applicable) that were backed up using automatic wireless backup

If the user is at the desktop computer, you can use the device manager to load the data using a connection to the BlackBerry Router. This option enables you to avoid sending large quantities of data over the wireless network. You can also enforce this option through an IT policy rule.

In the BlackBerry section of Experts Exchange, the fifth-most read newer thread is entitled "Upgrade BES From 3.6 to 4.1.2."

"If I run an upgrade of my BES from 3.6 to 4.1.2 do I need to get new SRP info from the network?," asks thread-starter stagetech.

Not to make matters easier, he tells us that he gas the download but cannot find the SRP code other than the one he had with his Blackberry Enterprise Server 3.6.

Top-ranked Blackberry expert garycutri has the answer.

"You don't need a new SRP, Auth CAL or user CALs," garycutriwrites. " If you do an upgrade the install process will automatically detect your licensing info from the current install."

Gary advises that before upgrading ensure your system meets the minimum requirement for software and hardware. I alway upgrade to 3.6 Service Pack 7 before updating this BES version.

"Also do a backup of you BES database, if you use SQL do a backup with the system manager or You don't need a new SRP, Auth CAL or user CALs," adds Gary. "If you do an upgrade the install process will automatically detect your licensing info from the current install. "

Then comes the needed minimum requirements admonition.

"Before upgrading ensure your system meets the minimum requirement for software and hardware. I alway upgrade to 3.6 Service Pack 7 before updating this BES version," Gary advises. Also do a backup of you rBES database, if you use SQL do a backup with the system manager or if you use MSDE just copy the BES files from \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data."

In the third-most read newer thread on the BlackBerry section of Experts-Exchange, member sarniscool admits that his first ever BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation attempt is giving him fits.

"How do I set this user up so that they can receive emails from the BES server,?" sarniscool asks. He writes that he already has downloaded the Desktop Manager, gone into the server and created a profile and generated and sent a password to use to activate the BlackBerry

"I typed that password in and activated from the BlackBerry, he writes."I've waited for about 30 minutes and nothing is happening. The server shows that it is initializing under status, but nothing else is changing."

His real wish in this regard is for step-by-step instructions.

These are, in fact provided by garicutri, the top-ranked BlackBerry expert on Experts Exchange.

"OK, when you install Desktop Manager ensure you select the "BlackBerry EnterpriseSever" option during the install," garycutri writes. " If these emails above continue to be blocked by your SPAM filter you won't be able to activate the users.

Then Garry advises:

1. Enter a rule into your SPAM filter to ensure the Blackberry emails aren't blocked.
2. Open BlackBerry Manager on the server just right mouse click in the users area and select "Add User".
3. Double click on the user and in Properties, choose "Set Activation Password".
4. Set a password and click Apply. the settings.
5. From the device go to the Enterprise Activation icon and enter the users email address and the password you just set.
6. Click the trackwheel and select activate.
   
   

Finally, garicutri mentions If you don't have an Enterprise Activation icon go into Options & Security (then General Settings on new devices), from security click the trackwheel and select Wipe Handheld. This will format the device and return it to factory settings.

BlackBerry 8700g user and BlackBerryForums.com Member Jaime says just that in his new thread that he has entitled, Red LED on Missed Calls." (Link below this post).

"I think that I lost that feature (maybe never had). When I miss a call, I would like to have the red led flashing, just like incoming email," he writes. "How can I do that?"

"Edit the profile for it and change the repeat notification to LED," advises fellow BBForums Member dkf747, otherwise known as "Talking BlackBerry Encyclopedia."

Yes, dkf747, but Jaime's already tried that.

"Is not working," writes Jaime in a follow-up post. "I tried before with no luck. Any clue?"

Kind of stumped on this one, BBHub readers. What's should Jaime do about his apparently dead red LED?

A new thread on the Yahoo! BlackBerry Users Group called "Pearl question about music" contains a basic discussion about the best way to get music on your BlackBerry Pearl.

"How do I put a song on my Pearl," asks Larry Daly. "I have tried media manager but its not working."

RkKeller replies that he has done so, and then asks Larry what he sees when he tries to.

"I start Desktop Manager then click Windows Media Player and it opens in its own window," Larry replies, "but how do I get music from left side of media manager to right?"

"You select the songs then click the arrow in the middle of the screen," RkKeller adds. "One puts it in and the other arrow takes it off."

Fellow Yhoo! BlackBerry Users Group Member Austin adds his own advice.

"Just drop and drag the files or copy them into your music folder on your microSD card," Austin says. "Copying them is the fastest and beat way I think. You have to have a microSD card or it won't work. You're limited to the size of media files you can put on your BB's memory

Last month the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center posted a very useful docoment entitled "Change The Default filter in your BlackBerry Internet Service Account."

I think this is a very useful primer for those BlackBerry users who wish to control which messages are forwarded to your BlackBerry device- and which are not.

Tell you what. If you have BlackBerry Internet Service 2.0 thru 2.2, you got a let up on them BIS 1.8 laggards.

First I will tell you about this procedure for BIS 2.0-2.2.

To change the default filter in BIS 2.0-2.2 you would perform the following steps:

1. Go to your service provider's BlackBerry Internet Service web site and log in to your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
2. Choose the appropriate email account, then click Filters.
3. Choose either Forward messages to handheld or Do not forward message to handheld. The change is saved automatically.

When you see these instructions for BIS 1.8, you may want to upgrade to BIS 2.x. But I realize you're probably very busy today and would rather do this quick configuration rather than the whole upgrade thing.

OK, then. So to change the default filter in BIS 1.8 perform the following steps:

1. Go to your service provider's BlackBerry Internet Service web site and log in to your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
2. In the top menu, click Filters.
3. On the Filters page, click the Forward messages to handheld hyperlink.
4. Select or clear the following options:

• Forward message to handheld- Select this option to forward messages to your BlackBerry device.
• Header only- Select this check box to only forward the message header to your BlackBerry device.
• Level 1 notification- Select this check box to forward messages with high importance to your BlackBerry device.
• Do not forward message to handheld- Select this option to leave the message in your BlackBerry Internet Service mailbox. The message is not forwarded to your BlackBerry device. Note: If you select this option, messages will not be forwarded to your BlackBerry device unless you have other filters set to forward messages.
  

5. Click Save and Close.

Now isn't BIS 2.x easier?

When you use the BlackBerry Gmail service to send messages from your BlackBerry device to another, they are stored in the Gmail Inbox as a conversation. They appear as new messages in the GMail Inbox.

But as the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center explains in a just-posted (and frankly a bit confusing) document entitled "Filter Messages sent from an integrated Gmail account," (link below) there's a way for you to create a filter that will prevent you from sending messages to or from a Gmail account on a BlackBerry device.

The document (which you can get to by clicking the Read prompt below this post) lists an eight-step procedure:

1. Log in to the BlackBerry Internet Service account.
2. Click filters beside the integrated Gmail account.
3. Click add filter.
4. Name the filter.
5. Click the drop-down menu beside apply filter when: and select the from field.
6. In the contains field, type the Gmail email account.
7. Select do not forward messages to handheld.

8. Click add filter.

Got that?

This one actually makes perfect sense, IMHO.

Posting on BlackBerryForums, Pearl user Tagbert complains that although he entered a password for his new Pearl running on his company's Exchange Server, the password was no longer recognized a day later.

JerryD seems to think the issue seems to be the difficulty in inputting passwords on the Pearl that some companie require- an arcane sequence of letters and numbers that is difficult to input and that some servers can forget.

Although Tagbert's follow-up post denies it, JerryD indicates that what would happen in instances like this would be to "THINK you entered the password with the letter I or the number associated with that key, but it's actually U!," he writes. "The funny thing is a user can go on for WEEKS - even MONTHS entering the password thinking it contains an I and not know it until they can't get the password right when connecting to Desktop Manager."

JerryD has four pieces of advice for BlackBerry users (Pearl or no) who want to stay away from this experience.

JerryD suggests:

1. Use the shortest password allowed (unless you're truly masochistic)
2. Use only the first character of any key. That is, if the first character on a key is U and the second is I, do NOT use the letter I in your password
3. Unless required, don't use upper case characters, symbols, or numbers
4. Do not hold down the key - this will induce an upper case character.

Have any BBHub readers had difficulties with Pearl passwords similar to those described by Tagbert?
