SK65Taiwan-based multi-media device maker BenQ is buying the handset and mobile devices manufacturing business of  Germany-based Siemens AG. The transaction is expected to be completed by October 1 of this year.

The pending deal doesn't mean Siemens the brand is going away. Siemens smartphones, including the SK65 with BlackBerry Built-In technology (shown at right) will live on for the next five years as branded product offerings of BenQ. In other words, Siemens phones won't be made or sold by Siemens, but the devices will still carry the Siemens livery.

Since BenQ doesn't currently make any phones or PDAs, the inclusion of the Siemens lines sounds like a good fit. What's even more interesting though, is BenQ's W11, a wireless 802.11b LAN card with voice processing capabilities. Presumably, a flavor of this card could be built into future generations of BenQ Siemens handsets, offering a flavor of VoIP over Wi-Fi.

BlackBerry Connect Update screenWhy the German language image of a BlackBerry Connect configuration screen over there on the upper right?

That's because BlackBerry Cool reports that a reader has notified them T-Mobile Austria has updated their BlackBerry Connect client for the Sony Ericsson P910i.

As you probably know, BlackBerry Connect facilitates BlackBerry push email to non-BlackBerry devices. The Siemens SK-65 and the MDA II  also run BlackBerry Connect.

Siemens SK65This review covers the basics of the Siemens SK65, one of the first phones to license BlackBerry software. The phone gets high marks on including BlackBerry support, its ingenius and physically usable design, and solid feel. But it lags bad in the user-interface department with the reviewer calling the menus "confusing", "too complicated", and saying that it's sometimes hard to know which button to press. The article doesn't include pictures so here's a link to Engadget's review with a number of close-up pics.

Siemens SK65There are three versions of the new Siemens SK65.

Two of the three versions have BlackBerry Built-In Technology. Those enable either BlackBerry Web client, for small home offices, and BlackBerry Enterprise Server, for larger businesses.

The other SK65 does not have BlackBerry Built-in. It has a standard mail client, and needs to connect to an enterprise server via MS Exchange or IBM Lotus Domino.
