Caveat, though. Got a magnifying glass handy?

I say this because this is a grab apparently from a scanned document. The print is tiny, but can be read with some artful squinting, a magnifying glass or perhaps some of both.

In between convention attendance and vacation (which I am supposed to be on now), I've been Photoshopping in a major way to get this image right for you. But you should be able to make some of this stuff out.

There is no sleeper function.
Price - $29.95 via Boxwave website
Rating - 4 of 5 stars

This is a very solid case. I had no trouble slipping the BlackBerry in the case. It fits snugly, but doesn't seem to be too tight. There is black foam lining the inside to protect the Blackberry from scratches and ensure a snug fit.

The clip is removable. It screws into the back of the case so if you want to be clip free there is not a knob on the back for the clip to hook on to.The case has a cut out for the led light on the front, one on the back for the speaker, and one above the screen for the other speaker.

The screen is protected by a hard cover. It is not the soft plastic cover on some cases. The keys are not covered at all. This could allow them to get damaged, but if they were covered it would be hard to use the BlackBerry without taking it out of the case.

I did find the keys around the outside edges were a little harder to use as the case it raised up over them, such as the delete or enter key. You are reaching down into the case to type. I found this a little annoying, but I think I would get used to it.

The other key I had a hard time getting to was the escape button on the side. The hinge sits above it and I found it was harder to push than normal. Again, this is something that you would probably get used to with time.

If you like your sleeper cases this may not be the case for you. There is no sleep function as there is nothing covering the key area where the magnet usually goes.

Overall this is a good case. It would work great if a normal leather case just isn't enough to keep your BlackBerry safe.

Personally, I will continue using my other case as I do not have a need for the protection and like to carry my cards around with my BlackBerry. My husband loves this case and can't wait to get one like it for his BlackBerry.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Patent app describes simultaneous recharging of multiple BlackBerry batteries

Technology described in a new BlackBerry Patent application would enable two or more BlackBerry batteries to be recharged simultaneously.

Patent Application 20070001644, "Methods and Apparatus For Simultaneously Charging Multiple Rechargable Batteries," contains an Abstract that says:

"A charger has two or more separate charging ports to which two or more rechargeable batteries can be coupled, respectively. Current from a single current source is allocated to the two or more separate charging ports so that the two or more rechargeable batteries will be fully charged at substantially the same time."

OK so that's cool. But why is this necessary? This Patent app's literature explains clearly.

"Many users of mobile electronic devices have a second battery on hand for use when the battery in the mobile electronic device is discharged," the application notes. "After discharging both batteries, a user will want to recharge the two batteries as quickly as possible.

Current options include the following:

Fully charging one battery using the charging circuitry in the mobile electronic device and an external power adapter, then exchanging the two batteries to charge the second battery.

Charging one battery using the charging circuitry in the mobile electronic device and an external power adapter, and simultaneously charging the second battery in an external battery charger;

cCharging one battery using the charging circuitry in the mobile electronic device connected to a dual-output external battery charger, with the second battery connected to the other output of the external battery charger. The external battery charger charges the batteries in sequential order without user intervention, or trickle charges one of the batteries while charging the other battery at full rate until it is fully charged, or gives one battery priority and provides all available current to that battery and any remaining current that can be supplied to the charger is provided to the secondary battery.

"These options either extend the charge time by charging the batteries in sequential order, by keeping one battery in slow-rate trickle charge until it is fully charged," the Patent app states, "or require the user to carry two separate charging accessories with them. "

That can be a pain.

So now let me show you Figure 1 from this Patent.

According to the Patent App, this is "a simplified front view of a charger 2, a battery-operated device 4 and a battery 6, in accordance with some embodiments of the invention. Charger 2 may have, for example, two charging ports 8 and 10. Battery-operated device 4 is coupled to charging port 8 and battery 6 is coupled to charging port 10.

"Charger 2 may be capable of simultaneously charging the battery of battery-operated device 4 and battery 6. In some embodiments of the invention, charger 2 may have more than two charging ports, and may therefore be capable of simultaneously charging more than two batteries," the Patent App literature explains. For example, a charger according to some embodiments of the invention may have five charging ports, and may be capable of simultaneously charging one, two, three, four or five batteries."

Far as I am concerned, the more BlackBerry batteries that can be charged this way, the better.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sport Holster Avialble For Active BlackBerry Owners

Ever gone out biking and not had a safe convenient place to put your BlackBerry? Not always practical.

Shiver your hands while you operate your handset. Painful, and haste to get your BB mission accomplished will be painful with each tap.

Put on your standard gloves and then use your device. Doesn't provide the tactile smoothness you need to navigate the small BlackBerry keyboard.

Oh but now a Montreal company has come up with tactile leather gloves called iTWYF.

Stands for I Touch With Your Fingers!

Just laughed in mild kink mode but this is true.

Here's how this works.

Three of the fingers come with special enhancements.

Thumb has a Velco strap that enables only the thumb to be exposed. Hey your thumb is your broadest finger. It can take the cold.

Index finger comes with a leather-strip that makes it easier to "target finger" for BlackBerry taping.

The middle finger offers a tiny stud (didn't think studs could be "tiny" but I don't know about such things) that can be used as a stylus. Not RIM applicable but you never know.

Seidio's out with a new 8100 charging cradle for the BlackBerry Pearl.

Link below.

To use this product on the road, you would want to plug in the USB Travel Charger included with the charging cradle to the mini USB slot in that cradle.

Then you dock your Pearl and things cool.

That'd be:

Seidio's Jet Black Silicone Skin, their Super Slim Crystal Case and their Rubberized Case.

Put phungy for the Rubberized Case. He likes the feel much better than the silicone skin, and thinks the Rubberized case "feels nice and smooth," too.

That the Jet Black Silicone Skin case at the top of this post. It's a case, not a descriptor of a human being.

OK, two more pix for ya:

Now to the phungy's fave, the Rubberized:

Clifton of BlackBerry Alliance member Man & Machine writes to let us know that the $129 CoolMIR external BlackBerry keyboard supports every BlackBerry device except the BlackBerry Pearl 8100.

While that certainly is news, the reason why the Pearl isn't supported yet is even bigger news. That is, there seems to be some charging issues related to BlackBerry OS 4.2.

And it's not only OS 4.2 that seems to be encountering problems.

"Hand held software version 4.1 for BlackBerry 8700 series, 7100 series and 7290 has a problem that forces the BlackBerry to charge from any external devices that is attached to its USB port even if it is not a power source," Clifton writes.

"In some cases, if it can not charge from the attached device, it resets itself," he adds.

Clifton says that Research In Motion has told him the 4.1 hand held software issue is being fixed in their next hand held software release., but then adds that hand software version 4.2 for the BlackBerry Pearl also has this bug.

It's Clifton's understanding this bug will be fixed in the next Pearl software update.

"To avoid this problem, Clifton advises to make sure the keyboard has more than 15% battery life when the Cool MIR is used.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ho-Foer tumster: are my Pearl, Razr chargers interchangeable?

Filed under: Support, Tips, Gear, Pearl 8100
Howard Forums Member tumster is wondering whether the chargers that came with his BlackBerry Pearl, Motorola RazrV3 and Motorola H605 Bluetooth headsets are interchangeable.

"Although the voltage is the same, the amps are different," he writes. "I doubt you'll have a problem using any of the available mini-USB chargers for other devices.

H-bomb then adds that standard USB power on a computer is 5V, 500mA. With that in mind, the Pearl can handle lower input current but probably at a slower charge speed.

"I would guess that the higher the current input the faster it will charge," H-bomb points, out, "but the heat generated may be detrimental to the battery in the long run."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Experts: Lithium-Ion batteries pretty much at limit

That Lithium Ion battery technology in your BlackBerry or other portable device may not have all that much room for improvement.

That's according to experts cited in a major new Wired magazine piece entitled "Building A Better Battery."

The problem, writer John Hockenberry explains, is that the size and performance of Li-ons, as Lithium-Ion batteries are often referred to, is set by inevitable chemical reactions necessary to make the batteries run. And Moore's Law- which has led to smaller chips and smaller devices, doesn't apply here.

Excellent piece, authortitative but easy read. I recommend you do just that. I've linked to that article below this post.

The BlackBerry Pearl cases really are flowing into the marketplace.

Latest example is BoxWave's new Designio Leather Case for the BlackBerry Pearl. It's a custom-fitted hard leather case with a form-fitting reinforced shell that molds around the Pearl.

There are accesisble cutouts as well, so you can get to the buttons and controls you'll need to control your Pearl.

The Designio Leather Case for the BlackBerry Pearl is listed at $43.95, but is available for purchase on the BoxWave site for $29.95.

He says the solution was easy.

"Now in Pearl there no IR and looks like this function ( send address book entry ) is not supported by Bluetooth," he writes.

"Well, I know, IR is obsolete, vinni_puh adds, "but unlike Bluetooth it WORKS immediately between any devices /zero hassle /plug and play!

Vinni_puh knows what he'd like RIM to do:

Hoping that RIM guys reading this and will add that to the Bluetooth," he writes in his HoFo post.

Hey, RIM reads us, too, vinni_pu.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New utility introduced for indoor BlackBerry signal boost

I've been in houses where I've moved around with my BlackBerry, but had to get close to a window unobstructed by trees to obtain a strong-enough signal so as to preclude, "Russ, lost you there for a second, could you please repeat that?"

That's not cool.

The next place and time this happens, I may just be unable to resist mentioning a product called the Z1900. This is, in essence, a signal booster technology that enhances the availability and clarity of a cell phone/BlackBerry signal when it is accessed indoors.

From Spotwave Wireless, the $399, Z1900 has an indoor coverage range of up to 2,500 square feet.

Touted as an "intelligent coverage system" that-unlike plain-vanilla signal-booster solutions- actually monitors indoor signal strength. This capability is said to prevent harmful interference and oscillation while ensuring the best signal possible.

The Z1900 also is also down with the battery life cause, emitting very low power to cell phones and causing less of a strain on cell (or in what matters to you readers) BlackBerry battery life.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Project-A-Phone lets you show your BlackBerry screens in presentations

Some skeptics deride the practicality and even the appeal of Project-a-Phone's new handset-to-phone projection utility.

But I think this is a cool tool.

Enables you to display the contents of your BlackBerry thru a projector, and then on to a display surface. We're talking one of those presentation screens at conferences.

The price isn't bargain basement, but I see some utility.

Deets and specs ("speets," I like to say).

ICD-5000 ($395)
