The warm temperatures in Chicago earlier this month belied the truism that the earth is getting warmer.

A BlackBerry Pearl-using BBHub reader took advantage of that relatively calm day to take a photo of the Chicago skyline from the vantage point of a nearby park.

Dusk in New York City, the city that never sleeps.

We have even had a beta, and a new version with bells and whistles.

According to Opera Mini's birthday site over 10 million people have tried it. I know I am one of them.

As a BlackBerry user Opera Mini is best at loading the websites that the BlackBerry browser can't, like My Space.

If you have an idea for an original birthday card send it in to Opera. I told him I would check it out.

"How much better can it actually be than the Password Keeper program that comes with the device?" I thought to myself.

It turns out that DataVault is quite a bit more convenient in a number of ways than Password Keeper. If you have complex passwords to keep track of (who doesn't nowadays), you owe it to yourself to at least see how DataVault works - you might be surprised how it can simplify your life.

The Basics

First off, DataVault comes with a program that runs on your BlackBerry and a program that runs on your PC. The nice thing about DataVault is that it's a breeze to keep data synchronized between the two. This makes an ideal setup - you enter those complex passwords (that are potentially a pain to enter on your device) on your PC's full keyboard and then have them sync to your BlackBerry where you'll have access to them wherever you are.

Security

Isn't this the virtual equivalent of writing my passwords on sticky notes? Not at all. You set up a password to get into the DataVault program on your PC as well as your BlackBerry. Also, DataVault will time out after a period of inactivity and prompt for the password again. This means your safe if you step away from your desk and leave DataVault up and running.

Encryption

The database where your passwords are actually stored is a highly encrypted file that uses AES encryption which is currently approved for use by the United States Government. This basically means that it would take several milleniums for someone to crack the encryption in your password file. It's a safe bet that you'll have changed your passwords by then. ;-)

Categories

You can assign categories to each confidential item in DataVault. This makes sorting and finding the password you're looking for a breeze. You can add new categories in addition to the ones that come with the program. Again, all this information is synced between your PC and your BlackBerry.

Information Templates

I should point out that passwords are an obvious choice for storing in DataVault, but you can store any type of information in it. It comes with dozens of templates for commonly used information (like driver's license info, credit card numbers, etc.) For example, do you have your car's Vehicle Identification Number memorized? (If so, that's pretty strange!)

Finding that Info Fast

The "find as you type" feature in the program (both on the PC and the BlackBerry) make searching for that bit of information lightning fast. This along with filtering by a category will help you pare down even the largest list of passwords.

Just click a button to copy a password (or other piece of info) to the clipboard.

Tons of Features

There's a ton of other features that you'll notice when you use the app - backup/restore, import from other applications and formats - even a built-in password generator to create a secure password when you need one.

Constant Improvements

The thing that sets apart certain software companies from others is their ability and motivation to make regular improvements to their products. Ascendo is no slouch when it comes to improvements. Just in the time since Ascendo contacted me about DataVault, they've released at least 3 new versions with new features.

If there's something you don't like about DataVault, just let Ascendo know - you might just see a feature that addresses your concern in a newer version very soon!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Your Strangest Use for Your BlackBerry

What's the strangest way you've gotten use out of your BlackBerry device? Has it been a life saver in a pinch? ("It was so windy and some papers would have blown away - so I used my BlackBerry as a paper weight!" doesn't count!)

Here's mine:

One warm summer evening our family went to a neighbor's house for a pot luck dinner. There's a small, windy trail that connects our houses - lots of turns and roots to trip on. We stayed a little longer than planned and it was pitch black dark when we made the trek home. No moon to light our way, no street lights, no flash light. My kids were starting to worry - would we ever make it home???

My trusty BlackBerry 8700 to the rescue! The backlight on the device is amazingly bright! I took it out and let it puts out just enough light to make out the trail on the way home.

Disaster averted! And I was the family hero! (Well, the BlackBerry was!)

It wasn't until I got back and searched around that I discovered there's a neat program for the BlackBerry called MyFlashLight that displays a white screen for just this purpose.

Were you in a bind where your BlackBerry came through somehow in a pinch?
One lucky (though that may be a matter of dispute) eBay bidder now has a white BlackBerry Pearl headed his way.

He stepped up to the plate and forked over $1,025.00.

Poorer? Maybe a bit. But it's his money, so who are we to criticize? Listen, I write this from a Las Vegas hotel room where downstairs, people are spending a good bit more and getting nothing in return.

But at least winning bidder datasquid (cool user name BTW) has a new BlackBerry Pearl. There is an over the air download I am running right now.

If you play at least 5 times in the month you are eligible for the contest. Prizes range from $10 to $30.

You do have to register to play, but the website says this is free as well.

The revenue, which is used for the prizes, comes from advertising, so you may be asked to view some ads. Remember this all counts as data, if you do not have unlimited.

I am going to check it out right now, but I wanted to share the news.

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

RealDice Sudoku Master 2 - Not My Kind Of Sudoku

RealDice's Sudoku Master 2 is not a Sudoku game I like.

Pros - You can play online against other people.
Cons - Very jumpy application, takes long to load. Game design was hard to use.
Price - $20.00 via RealDice Website or $14.95 via Handango
Rating - 2 of 5 stars

The RealDice website pointed me to a web site that did not work on my BlackBerry browser, but would pull up using Opera Mini. Opera invoked my BlackBerry browser to download the game.

I would love to see RealDice fix the wap site so it will work on the BlackBerry browser. However you can also download the trial version from Handango (where I link to below) where interestingly enough the game is cheaper to buy.I found the interface of the game a little complicated. I couldn't just type a number in the box from the BlackBerry keypad.

I had to select the correct option from the menu on the left and the use the alt key and scroll wheel to scroll to the correct number.

Also I have never played a game of Sudoku that didn't have the 9 by 9 boxes marked off on the board. Usually a darker or thicker line to show where those boxes are.

I found the game would take a very long time to load most of the time. And like other RealDice games I have tried out the game was jumpy. Images would appear and vanish quickly on the screen.

I thought the idea of being able to play online with other people was great. I was able to log on and find someone else to play with very easily.

If RealDice was able to make some changes to the game I think it might be a good Sudoku game.

I have included some other pictures I took of the game. First is the number selection menu. Next is the online menu. And the last picture is the game board with the pencil marks.

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Blue Mood Theme released for 8700

Are you in a blue mood?

If it's emotional, can't help you there (actually I could, but you're buying this round).

But if we are talking about a "mood" in which you would like t o see a blue-colored theme on your BlackBerry 8700, BlackBerry Theme Central can help you.

And I can help them help you, or help them to help you. They get in my way, hey hey.

But put 'em in skateparks and it is fun to watch 'em rip.

Sometimes the very act of them rippin' makes a fun photograph.

And if you have a Pearl, such as BBHub reader iswise "wisely" (baa boom ba bing) had with him a couple weeks back, well, why not.

Great timing iswise. And dude you really captured the concentration in your friend's eyes.

If I tried this- even back when I was his age- torn cartilage city.

Worse torn cartilage than I actually had.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Why we run those photos of fish, birds, starlets, etc.

A number of you question the value of running an aquarium photo some guy has taken with his Pearl. Or why we like those shots of celebrities using- or even just toting- their BlackBerry.

Several reasons.

First, the BlackBerry Pearl was a major expansion, indeed transformation, of Blackberry from an enterprise-centric device to one which is making an impact in the consumer world. The sharply increased sales, and stock price, surrounding the release is a major development.

The presence of the camera in the Pearl is a major motivator for sales. And look it- we live in a cell phone camera world. Michael Richards' racist harangue. George Allen's "macaca"- which went on YouTube and could have accounted for the shifting of U.S. Senate power. Heck, even Saddam's hanging. All captured on cell phone cameras.

Pearl was not the camera of those for any of these events, but my point is that with video recording capability, Pearl could be. Whether video or still, the presence of cell phone cameras was a major reason why our corporate colleagues at TIME Magazine named "You" Person of the Year.

But what about the fishes and the birds and the nature scenes? Amateur and professional photographers have been taking photos of these scenes for years. I know, I'm one.

Many are challenging to shoot- a fish through glaring aquarium glass. A cat that happens to be sitting still. A friend's face through shadows.

Now these challenges are available for BlackBerry users to tackle. That's big news.

Yea, but what about Paris, Lindsay, Britney, the Simpsons (the live performers not the cartoon characters), the Olsens?

These people are trend-setters. More than that, they represent a new generation of celebrities who, like their non-famous peers, are comfortable with using technology themselves. You can bet that lots of older performers have their phone calls placed for them and their email read back to them by harried assistants. Not this bunch.

Oh. One more thing. Blame it on the "culture"- or lack thereof, but we can tell from our server logs that these posts are very popular. You flock to them.

So I guess what I am driving at here is BBHub is a big tent. You can find out the answers to the most oblique BlackBerry Enterprise Server issues, read a BlackBerry game review, check up on what investors are thinking about RIM, find out about new BlackBerry handsets and be alerted to bugs.

And sometimes fish as well.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
