On the BlackBerry section of Experts-Exchange, one of the most-read thread these days is "BlackBerry Enterprise Server-Email Not Synching Properly In Inbox." Link below.

Started by NTJOCK, the thread involves two issues. One, that synchro happens too quickly, causing spam to replicate to the BlackBerry which requires a "synch now" to clear it.

The second issue is way more complicated, I promise you that.

"I have many rules running on my mailbox at the client and server level," NTJOCK writes. "They process a variety of email that we get from vendors and systems. I probably get 200 emails a day and only 40 of them require me to read them. The other 160 are some combination of status updates for orders, confirmations, faxes, system messages, etc. I have rules setup to move these to the right folders, forward them when appropriate, or just flat delete them."

Would this be so easy.

"The problem is that they get replicated out to my blackberry before the rule on the client 'gets'them," NTJOCK explains. "They do get moved to the right folder (usually), but after they are moved they "stay" on the BB. This is really frustrating because I have 160 msgs/day of clutter on my PDA."

Ace Experts-Exchange expert garycutri to the rescue.

"If an email is moved from the inbox to a public folder the BE will not be able to track that email hence (hey Gary is from Australia where they say "hence") the changes aren't applied to the device," he writes. "As another example if you delete an email and empty the recycle bin before the device has a change to reconcile the BES will loose track of that email and it won't be removed from the device.

"With all the spam filter I use on Exchange they prevent the spam email from hitting the exchange server so there is never an issue with the device receiving filter spam," Gary points out. "You can add a blacklist to exchange so you ensure the spam never reaches the server. I normally use the free list from www.spamhaus.org."

Then Gary adds this important piece of advice: "When you set rules to automatically move email ensure that the folder you are moving them too is a sub folder of the inbox otherwise the BES can't track the email and hence can't reconcile the changes to the handheld."

Linked below, a new BlackBerry Knowledge Base Document offers instructions for working within the BlackBerry Java Development Environment to create an Event within the BlackBerry Calendar application.

This is possible because BlackBerry JDE 4.0 offers the personal digital assistance profile (PDAP) package to provide allow access to the Calendar, Tasks, and Address Book applications on the BlackBerry device.

Included within the net.rim.blackberry.api.pdap package is the BlackBerryEvent interface, This interface defines extended fields in the event, along with the standard fields obtained through the javax.microediition.pim.Event interface.

He's actually done it with a movie called Forget Paris.

In this post, I will tell you what anxious dog did, as well as include a detailed description of the DVD to .avi process necessary as a prelude to BlackBerry media conversion.

First, h anxiousdog used a program called SimpleDivX to rip a DVD and convert it into an avi. He links to the instructions but doesn't actually spell them out. That doesn't mean we won't. In fact, we will.

Come along, for directions written by Jinks, screencaps taken by him too and then P-shopped by yours truly.

1. Select the directory in which the burnt VOB files (or entire DVD is). I Select the main movie, note the framerate number and click the next tab (Video).

2. In the video settings, select the right framerate based on the one you saw in the step before. Click enable Video Stream and use 0xE0. Now click Auto Retrieve cropping and select width 640. Leave everything blank in Frame Options. You may want to preview the video, and then click the Audio tab.

3. Click Create Audio. Then select Check Audio and Deselect Extract all Audio. Now on the language drop-down menu it will indentify what languages are available so that you can encode your final product with. Select the one you want (be careful not to select any director's comment track). Now on Audio Format, you can choose AC3 which will keep the best sound possible (6 channels) but will increase the size of the final file (thus meaning it might not fit on a CD-R.) I suggest to use MP3 and change bitrate to 128kbps. You can click on Midnight Mode (which will normalize the audio to 100% and increse sound in places needed throughout the encode). Then click the Codec tab.

4. Click the codec you will like to use. XviD is the best choice. Make sure you select to create a 2-pass video file. It will take more time, but the quality is going to be much better. In the Advance Settings you can make the video of a higher quality but from experience this file will come out larger than a 700mb disc. I normally leave everything blank but you can select Quarter Pixel (which increases the accuracy of micro-blocks within the film). The interlace option can also be used if wanted. On the fourth step screen again, you will see at the bottom Pass Options. I normally do Both passes but if for some reason you want to do a First Pass then after a day do the 2nd pass then this is also possible. Now click at the Compression tab.

5. On the top of the Compression view, make sure you click Enter Final Movie Size. Then Get Time from Movie. In the File Size bar put in 700mb if you want it to fit on one disc, but if you know the movie is very long for example ''The Godfather'' then this will be better spread onto two discs, so choose 1400MB. Now this is where it gets a little complicated. If you place your movie and you have followed everything in this guide and the movie's Bitrate is 700kbps or less, then you can either click at the bottom End-Credicts and click Do Not Include end credits in movie (if available). Another tip is if you are watching a movie and you know there is not much action in it (i.e. Slow Mystery) then click in the Advanced Bitrate Properties (Not Much Action in movie). If your movie is over 740kbps in the Bitrate section then do not worry at all. Now click the Misc. tab.

6. If you want to Create Subtitles using VobSub then click this. It will list all the available languages. Click the one you want (If you are watching the finished movie with Windows Media Player and want to see subtitles, make sure you have the final movie in a folder with the two subtitles) and it will play them. Also make sure you always click AVI as the movie's container. After you do so, click the Project tab.

7. In the project name, call the movie whatever you want (preferably the title of it). Create a temporary folder on your harddrive for SimpleDivX to store unfinished, unsorted data. (tip: make sure you clean this out once in a while because it can get huge in size). Make an output folder for the finished movie. Do NOT click overwrite files and delete temp files when finished because from experience this will tamper with your workflow. Just delete manually and especially problematic if you are doing a lot of jobs. The split total file at feature is great because if you want to put the movie onto two seperate discs, then this will split it at 700mb to be able to fit onto a disc. Deselect if you want oneAVI movie (of whatever size) without a cut. The Batch settings section is very handy as you can place jobs, if you are doing more than one movie, and it will do them all together. Just remember that everytime you click on a job and change something then click Modify so SimpleDivx can understand what you have changed. That's all here, now click the Output tab.

8. This (screen) will basically explain what is going on with the encoding process. If you want to Shut Down the Computer when the encoding process finishes select it. And then START to start the encoding process. And it will begin. The Last tab stated as Setup should be left UNTOUCHED.

OK, now anxiousdog says it took his computer about 1 ½ hours to rip the DVD to a 1.2 gig AVI file. But at that point, anxiousdog was ready to convert the video to a smaller file with a smaller frame size so it would work as a Pearl video file. He hecided to use a program called SUPER for this task.

Let't look at a SUPER screen:

Here's the settings anxiousdog said he used.

+ Output Container = AVI
+ Output Video codec = H.263
+ Aspect can be 11:9, 4:3 or 1:1
+ Frame/sec should be 14.985
+ Bitrate kbps should be 576

Then anxousdog tells us that he performed the following steps:

1. Entered the settings.
2. Right-clicked and specified the output folder destination where he wanted his file to be saved. He created a separate BlackBerry folder for his Pearl-sized movies.
3. Dragged the file into SUPER and hit ENCODE.
4. This series will put a face to many of the software programs you know and love. Developers are often power users who have unique perspectives on the industry. Many are entrepreneurs with colorful careers in technology. This series will give you a glimpse into their worlds and their outlook on the future of the BlackBerry.

The second interviewee is Paul Dumais from Idokorro. Idokorro has produced some very popular and quite useful BlackBerry applications including Mobile SSH (this one comes in handy for me quite frequently!), Mobile Desktop, Mobile Admin, and most recently Idokorro's Mobile File Manager. Paul also was a contributor to my book, BlackBerry Hacks.

Paul has agreed to answer questions in the comments of this post, so if something's on your mind, feel free to ask away!

If you are a BlackBerry software developer and think you'd make a good candidate for the interview series, drop me a line at davemabe at gmail dot com.

Dave: Tell us a little about yourself, Paul.

Paul: I'm Paul Dumais and live in Ottawa Canada. I'm the co-founder and VP of Software Development at Idokorro. I'm responsible for the technical and strategic direction of our products, establishing our roadmap and conceiving new products.

Dave: What BlackBerry do you use now and what PDAs have you used in the past?

Paul: Right now I'm using a BlackBerry 8100 Pearl. Personally, I prefer using BlackBerry devices with a full QWERTY keyboard, but the Pearl has such amazing new features that are not available yet on other devices. My first PDA was a Newton, followed by a Palm V which I received at the JavaOne Conference. Palm gave out a Software Development Kit along with the device to encourage people to develop applications for it - which I thought was a brilliant idea.

Dave: Why is the BlackBerry a good platform to develop on?

Paul: The great thing about developing on the BlackBerry platform is the built-in security features for application developers. The biggest problem when you're developing remote access products is to adequately address security and firewall issues. The BlackBerry is great because both of these issues are already solved so comprehensively before you even start developing the application. It also just makes for an easy answer when customers want to know how the application is secured. From a customer perspective, the configuration is that much easier.

Dave: Other than your own, name your three favorite applications for the BlackBerry.

Paul: I travel a lot for tradeshows, events and just for fun, and have found Google Maps to be very useful in helping me get around unknown cities. Spider Solitaire from Magmic is my favourite app for killing time on flights and in airports. Lastly the Chronicle Road app is pretty neat -- I love seeing where I have been and look forward to using the BlackBerry Pearl's camera for more mobile blogging.

Dave: What's your favorite trick or feature that you use on your BlackBerry?

Paul: Whenever someone gives a demo of a BlackBerry application to a large audience they usually use a device called an Elmo to project the image of the BlackBerry onto a large screen. A few months ago we had to do this, and I figured there just had to be a better way than holding your BlackBerry under a video camera. I was advised that the license agreement for the BlackBerry Simulator did not permit giving demos with it, so we had to come up with something else. So we came up with the idea for a Windows tool that would display the screen of a BlackBerry device through a USB cable. The way it works is it captures screens one after the other and pretty much displays the equivalent of a live demo. It means I can connect my laptop to the projector and everyone can see the screen of my BlackBerry. We call this tool the BlackBerry Viewer, and we are giving it away for free for now (contact sales@idokorro.com if you want a copy), but we have not developed it into a commercial product yet because it has many imperfections. I don't believe in releasing products that are not high quality, but it does the job for now. We are waiting for new API's from RIM that will allow us to improve it and make it into a commercial product.

Dave: What's the most important feature that the BlackBerry lacks?

Paul: One of the things that the BlackBerry really lacked was some sort of multi-dimensional input, like a touch screen or a D-pad, but this was recently resolved with the introduction of the Pearl. Now I think the next big thing would be to increase the display size, which is difficult to do without increasing the device size. I think we will probably see advancements in display size coming through innovations like roll-able displays and micro projectors.

Another aspect that needs to be improved is the browsing experience. The reality is that web developers write their websites to work with the most common web browsers in the world, which means IE, Firefox and Safari. In order for a browser to display sites properly, it really has to use one of these three rendering engines. It's an almost impossible task for someone to write a new web browser from scratch today and make it work for all existing sites, because everything out there was written for the existing browsers, their features and known bugs. The Nokia Series 60 v.3 devices have started using Safari as their web browser, and Windows Mobile devices use IE. From a web browsing perspective, if the BlackBerry wants to compete with these devices, my prediction is that they will have to start using one of the common rendering engines.

Dave: Where do you see the focus of third party programs for the BlackBerry going over the next few months?

Paul: Everyone knows that BlackBerry devices are getting more powerful with every model. The lines between desktops, laptops, tablets, UMPCs, and smartphones are blurring more and more, and we all know that eventually smartphones will be as powerful as laptops.

I think this is important when we think about what applications are coming. Idokorro has focused on network administration and remote access tools, and our newest products help blur the lines described above. Mobile Desktop, for example, lets you run apps from your BlackBerry that you'd usually run on your desktop. Say I want to do some online banking from my BlackBerry, but my bank only allows me to use Internet Explorer because of the complex JavaScript and DHTML. I just use Mobile Desktop to connect to my remote desktop, and then run Internet Explorer 7 right from my BlackBerry. Or say I need to fix a bug in some code or build a new version of an application; I can use Mobile Desktop to run the BlackBerry JDE and recompile an app right from my BlackBerry!

Dave: Thanks, Paul!

Paul: Sure, Dave.

Previous Interviews in the BlackBerry Developer Interview Series:

It's kind of like the Dashboard on Mac OS X or <strike>Konfabulator</strike> Yahoo! Widgets for your PC.

I like this idea. I think we'll see more and more widgets on regular computers and extending them to the mobile arena seems natural.

Unfortunately, the BlackBerry isn't on the official list of supported phones. However, WidSets is Java based and it shouldn't be too difficult to add support for the BlackBerry. From this forum post, it looks like they're already working on it.

I can't wait to try it out on the BlackBerry. Has anyone tried it out on another phone?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Upgraded BlackBerry network traffic simulation tool released

Thought of headlining this post, "new Torrent released for BlackBerry."

But that would be an attempt to trick you into thinking I was talking about those file-swappin' torrents.

Wouldn't do that to you. But there is a Torrent involved here- Release 2.0 of the Torrent 5100 GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) Test System.

Won't leave you in the soup. GPRS=General Packet Radio Service.

From Mobile Metrics, this systemm which came out last month- simulates BlackBerry usage traffic patterns over a metwork, and then spits out results.

The results are displayed in a Histogram format.

Hey, come along. Even if you could give a whit (such a gentleman) about GGSN these pix are kinda cool in an abstract art sort of way.

As in:

Or detailed, time-based, Badwidth analysis breakouts, such as:

Overgrown soccer net..kinda, no?
