Stack Pro Rcbjr posted the information on the Cingular OS 4.2.0.84.

Looks like this OS is what the new Cingular Pearls are shipping out with now.

Not sure what the differences are from the T-Mobile and other versions of the Pearl 4.2 OS. If you have tried it out please let us know what you think.

However it seems there is still no option to turn off the auto dim feature.

I know I love to have the most up to date OS, but only try it out if you are comfortable. Lots of changes:

Previously, if you were setting up a conference call and you ignored an incoming call, you might not have been able to connect the two parties to the conference call.

Previously, if you had set the smart dialing option for calling a corporate extension and you used the redial feature on a Bluetooth-enabled headset to call an extension number, you might have reached the corporate number but you might not have reached the extension number.

Previously, if you muted a phone call and then placedthat call on hold to receive a second call, the second call might not have been muted but the mute status indicator might still have appeared.

Previously, if you were on a conference call using a BlackBerry 8700 Wireless Handheld[TM] that was paired with a Bluetooth(R)-enabled headset and you ended the conference call from the headset, the call might still have appeared to be active.

Previously, in rare situations, when you used Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) to dial in to a conference call, the DTMF tone delivery might have been delayed for more than one minute.

Previously, if you missed a phone call or received a voice mail message, the buttons in the dialog box might have been left-aligned.

Previously, if you were using a Jabra BT250 Bluetooth headset, the mute function might not have worked properly.

Previously, if you received a phone call but the caller disconnected the call before you answered, your device might have continued ringing for about ten seconds.

Previously, if you received a phone call from an unknown number, the caller ID information might have been blank instead of displaying "Unknown Number".

Previously, if you set the Restrict My Identity field to Always in the phone options, your phone number might still have appeared on a contact's phone when you made a phone call.

Previously, your device might have displayed the speakerphone indicator when your device was connecting to or disconnecting from a phone call, even if you were not using speakerphone mode.

Previously, if you received a call from a private number, the phone details might have been blank instead of displaying "Private Number".

Previously, if you were using a BlackBerry 8700 Wireless Handheld and you pressed the Speakerphone key during a phone call, you might have been asked to identify a currency format.

Previously, if you were using a BlackBerry 8700 Wireless Handheld and during a phone call you pressed the Speakerphone key, a Help screen might have appeared.

Previously, if you were using a BlackBerry 8700 Wireless Handheld and you muted a phone call, the icon in the top left corner of the screen did not change.

Previously, if you tried to join to calls into a conference call, your device might not have responded as expected while you were on the conference call, and you might not have been able to hear voices or dial tones.

Previously, if you were using a BlackBerry 8700 Wireless Handheld and you typed a phone number, and then pressed the Send key, the call might not have been connected.

Clifton of BlackBerry Alliance member Man & Machine writes to let us know that the $129 CoolMIR external BlackBerry keyboard supports every BlackBerry device except the BlackBerry Pearl 8100.

While that certainly is news, the reason why the Pearl isn't supported yet is even bigger news. That is, there seems to be some charging issues related to BlackBerry OS 4.2.

And it's not only OS 4.2 that seems to be encountering problems.

"Hand held software version 4.1 for BlackBerry 8700 series, 7100 series and 7290 has a problem that forces the BlackBerry to charge from any external devices that is attached to its USB port even if it is not a power source," Clifton writes.

"In some cases, if it can not charge from the attached device, it resets itself," he adds.

Clifton says that Research In Motion has told him the 4.1 hand held software issue is being fixed in their next hand held software release., but then adds that hand software version 4.2 for the BlackBerry Pearl also has this bug.

It's Clifton's understanding this bug will be fixed in the next Pearl software update.

"To avoid this problem, Clifton advises to make sure the keyboard has more than 15% battery life when the Cool MIR is used.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pearl-running BlackBerry Desktop 4.2 new functions listed here

Filed under: Software, BlackBerry OS 4.x, BlackBerry Enterprise Server

The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 will run BlackBerry Desktop Software Version 4.2.

Just a little while ago, the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has just posted the release notes for BlackBerry Desktop Software V 4.2.

Here's what's new in V4.2, as compared to earlier builds:

Added the Media Manager tool, which wil lbe available for use with BlackBerry devices running 4.2 or later of BlackBerry device software. This tool will allow you to transfer files between your computer and your BlackBerry device's internal memory or optional media card external memory. Media Manager also supports file management of internal and external memory, which allows users to browse, add, delete, copy, rename and view non-system files and folders on the BlackBerry.

Don't let me forget to mention the Switch Card Media Wizard, which wil llet you transfer data from one media card to another.

But there's a lot more...
Added the Switch Device Wizard, an application that lets you migrate data from a BlackBerry device, Palm device, or even a Windows Mobile device to your new BlackBerry (the Pearl, maybe)?

The Wizard can transfer all of your existing organizer and message data, including device software and installed third-party apps. Even your BlackBerry Enterprise Server settings can be transferred from your old BlackBerry to your new.

The Application Loader tool has been enhnaced. If you are upgrading from v 4.0 to 4.2, all third-party apps that you had installed wirelessly or via USB are preserved.

And what's more, the Application Loader has a remote functionality that can automatically scan for a user's BES from a list.

The Intellisync organizer data syncrhonization tool has been renamed Synchronize. Its User interface has been streamlined.

One more thing: the Redirector Settings Tool has a new name: Email Settings. This tool now allows Microsoft Exchange users to access message redirection stats from the Email Settings tool.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

7290 user upgrades to OS 4.1 but browser icon disappears

Filed under: Software, Stories, Cingular-AT&T, 7290, BlackBerry OS 4.x

Pinstacker dc2193 has an interesting issue.

He's recently updated his BlackBerry 7290 to BlackBerry OS 4.1 but after the procedure his browser icon seems to have disappeared.

"I got the themes to load fine and no where on the phone can I get a browser icon," he tells us. "Emails come through fine and Cingular Tier two and I have gone round and round to make sure the back end is provisioned correctly. Anyway to install a browser ap by way of desktop manager? and if so which one?"

By the way it is refreshing to read a report from a user who doesn't automatically blame tech support for something not happening.

It's then that Pinstacker msbrenda64 acknowledges that a conversation with a Cingular Tier Two probably has covered service books. But then she comes up with an alternative: Opera Mini.

The Blackberry Technical Knowledge Center has posted a Known Issues document describing why all of the contacts you inherit when you upgrade from BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise 4.0 to 4.1 don't appear.

The issue occurs because contacts you have created prior to your BES upgrade cannot be correctly processed should you reactivate your BlackBerry devices.

Fortunately there is a workaround. This involves performing the following steps

Remove the affected account from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Add the account to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server again.

Assign the address book to the account.

Perform a security wipe of the BlackBerry device. For instructions, follow the Wipe Handheld procedure outlined in KB-02318.

There's a newly posted BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center page entitled "How To- Access the Address Book from the Phone Application." Link below.

Here's why this is a document you may wish to check out.

As you may or may not know, the phone application in BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 lets you access your Address Book by typing characters within the Phone Hotlist. That's if- and only if- your Phone List View is not set to Call Log.

There's been a tweak in 4.1, though. You cannot directly access your Address Book by typing characters into the Phone Hotlist.

No can do, y'all.

So that means you will need to this directly by addressing your address book.

The quickest way to do this is by pressing the Send key (shown at right).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Now and "forever"- here's how to future-config your BlackBerry calendar

Filed under: Software, Support, Tips, BlackBerry OS 4.x

Like to plan ahead? Good life skill to have, IMHO.

BlackBerry users who "plan ahead" might want to read the newly posted BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center document entitled "How To - Configure the calendar to synchronize future items or items that fall within a range of days."

By "range of days," we are talking about, oh, 15, 30, ..and literally up until forever.

Your options are the most robust if you are running BlackBerry OS 4.0 or above.

In that case you would want to future-config your BlackBerry calendar by performing the following five steps:

On the BlackBerry device Home screen, click Calendar.

Click the trackwheel and select Options.

Select the Keep Appointments field, click the trackwheel, and select Change Option.

Select one of the following choices:
15 Days
30 Days
60 Days
90 Days
Forever

Click the trackwheel and select Save.

The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has just posted a new How To document.

Title: Restore messages from a previous BlackBerry device to a new BlackBerry device during an enterprise activation .

Let's go thru the problem and then the solution.

"When BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 is used with certain carriers, Short Message Service (SMS) message corruption occurs when sending an SMS message using a DatagramConnection," the How To Notes. "The text that is received by the SMS recipient will appear garbled."

The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 2.0 is known to display an error entitled, "You have configured the maximum number of email accounts."

According to a newly posted document on the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center, one way this can come about is if you upgrade a BlackBerry Connect-enabled device from BlackBerry Internet Service 1.8 with four integrated email accounts, one will be lost in order to conform to the three-email account limit.

There is a resolution. Not one which changes things the way you want, but makes the best of the situation.

"When deleting an integrated email account from the BlackBerry Internet Service, also delete the corresponding service book from the device prior to accepting a new service book for a new integration," the document advises. "For instructions on deleting a service book from the device, see the user guide for your device."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

BlackBerry Desktop Manager installation error explained

Filed under: Support, Tips, BlackBerry OS 4.x

From time to time, BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.1 (shown at right) will display an error opening installation log file message.

The subject is described in a newly BlackBerry Technical Support document.

The doc describes the phenomenon as one in which when you try to install desktop manager and open the installation log file you see an error message that says:

"Error opening installation log file verify that the specified log file exist and is writable."

Fixing this is a ten-step process.

Here's how:

In Microsoft Windows Explorer, go to the C:\ drive and create a new folder called TEMP2.

Open the Control Panel and double-click the System icon.

On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.

In the User variables list, select TEMP and click Edit.

In the Variable value field, change the file path to C:\TEMP2 and click OK.

In the User variables list, select TMP and click Edit.

In the Variable value field, change the file path to C:\TEMP2 and click OK.

In the Environment Variables window, click OK.

In the System Properties window, click Apply, then click OK.

Repeat the installation procedure for the BlackBerry Desktop Software.

Although the survey was published last fall and has been sponsored by Microsoft, that's only two strikes.

But since many home runs have been hit with two strikes, I am going to cut this study comparing the RIM BlackBerry OS 4.0 and BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 vs. the Windows Mobile 5.0 Messaging and Security Feature Pack with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 Solution.

BlackBerry partisans, prepare to get your feelin's hurt. The results show Microsoft has RIM beat on total cost of ownership, tighter integration, and larger selection of applications.

RIM gets a bone for superior user policy management and security.

The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has acknowledged a known Service Book Database issue. The problem is related to BlackBerry Internet Service 2.0.

In reading the page associated with this issue, we learn that BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 introduced the wireless backup and restore feature. With BlackBerry Device Software 4.1, the Service Book database will backup and restore wirelessly.

The note explains that his backup excludes any Service Books provided by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. That's because prior to BlackBerry Device Software 4.1, the Service Book database did not backup wirelessly.

The issue becomes problematic if a BlackBerry Enterprise Server user also uses the BlackBerry Internet Service and changes BlackBerry devices, the Service Books database will be restored upon completing an enterprise activation. Unforunately, this proecedure will provide the user with Service Books for an account the user is not authorized to use. In order for this to occur, both devices must be running Device Software.

The solution is to send new BlackBerry Internet Service 2.0 Service Books for this account.

Instructions on how to do so are contained in the document I've linked to below.

Earlier this past week, the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center posted a new document called "The specified delivery method is not possible."

The document offers five causes, as well as a resolution for each.

The five explained causes include:

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Device Software version is earlier than 4.0.

The BlackBerry Browser has not been used since BlackBerry MDS was started.

The push.application.reliable.ports parameter has not been added to the BlackBerry MDS rimpublic.properties file.

The application is not running or not listening on the correct port.

The application is not using MDSPushInputStream to receive the incoming data.

Our proprietor, a noted BlackBerry user named Jason, wanted to know if there is a tool that will let him synch Google Calendar with his BlackBerry.

Ever-alert Scott posts that indeed there is such a tool, and it is called GCALSYNC.

I did more research and found out that this is a free tool that works with BlackBerry OS 4.0 or above.

Not only does it slice and dice but you can:

Download events from Google Calendar to your phone's calendar;

Upload events created on the phone;

If an event has been changed in Google Calendar since last sync it will be updated on the phone; and

Specify time period you want to sync as number of past days (default: 1) and number of future days (default 30).

Be aware, though, GCALSYNC sounds kind of buggy. Buggy as in very new, with a big-fixing hundredth decimal point upgrade once every few days, and a rocky relationship with Cingular. Due to Cingular's security restrictions, you can download previously completed Google Calendar files, but you won't be able to add new events.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

BlackBerry Tech Knowledge Center Doc of Day: BlackBerry Internet Service versions

Filed under: Software, Support, Tips, BlackBerry OS 4.x, BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Time once again to pick up on our new BBHub daily feature called BlackBerry Support Document of the Day.

Every week, the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center lists their 25 most viewed documents for that week.

Every day, starting from #1, we've been identifying a document on this list. We skipped a couple of days earlier this week because the Knowledge Center list page was down, but it is back up now so once again we are ready to rock.

As to be expected, there has been some shuffling in the rank order of viewed documents. So today we go to the current #22, "What Is - Different versions of BlackBerry Internet Service."

Self-explanatory title for a document that describes interface differences between the BlackBerry Internet Service 2.0 Login Screen and the BlackBerry Internet Service 1.8 Login Screen as well as between the BlackBerry Internet Service 2.0 Account Management screen (shown at top) and the BlackBerry Internet Service 1.8 Inbox- which is here:
