Caveat, though. Got a magnifying glass handy?

I say this because this is a grab apparently from a scanned document. The print is tiny, but can be read with some artful squinting, a magnifying glass or perhaps some of both.

In between convention attendance and vacation (which I am supposed to be on now), I've been Photoshopping in a major way to get this image right for you. But you should be able to make some of this stuff out.

Sorry to be a little late on this but I have been on planes most of the day.

Seems like Boy Genius' server logs revealed a couple of accesses to his site from a BlackBerry 8820.

Rather than within RIM- where tracks-covering would surely be implemented- I guess this one's coming from a third-party testing site, a carrier, or both.

And what did they have to say?

"This February, RIM will be launching its new "white Pearl." It will also be unveiling one of the company's sleekest handsets yet, the BlackBerry 8800 "Indigo," at Barcelona's 3GSM conference."

Now I wondered at the mention of RIM launching the White Pearl in February as it is already available from T-Mobile. Maybe it will become available from other providers in February.

However this seems to confirm what we have already seen today, and doesn't need a translation. Those of us who are hooked on the full size BlackBerry may not have much longer to wait.

The website goes on to talk about RIM stock prices and how some people might not want to wait for an iPhone or may prefer the traditional full keypad over the touchscreen.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

German site points to Blackberry 8800, carrier info announcement on Feb. 12

Filed under: T-Mobile, Vodafone, International, 8800, Rumors

Google's translation engine ain't exactly perfect, but it seems to get at the edges of facts in a de internet.com article posted today that implies the BlackBerry 8800 will be unveiled February 12 and released sometime in March.

I just love the way Google translates this stuff. It has a rhythmic, almost high-tech pidgin English ring to it.

But you don't want me to talk about the translation. You want me to write about what the translation says.

OK, then, <a href="http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-8800-series-discussion/62313-8800-coming-february-12th.html"">as linked from BlackBerryForums, it reads as such:

Blackberry manufacturer the Research in Motion (RIM) continues to renew his product range. The newest equipment with the type name 8800 is reported euro in March on the German market to come, "on Sunday" (coming expenditure) with reference to persons trusted with the procedures. The newest version of the mobile phone with mobile E-Mail receipt, particularly liked with managers, will be available with T-mobile as well as Vodafone.

Observers expect that the Canadians will present new mobile phone of the public for the first time on the portable radio fair 3GSM in Barcelona in the middle of February. The prices might be with contract below 300 euro, it are said.

As the trade journal continues to write, the successor of the popular Blackberry 8700 receives a larger display and for the first time also with a government inspection department chip for navigation is equipped. The beginner supports the GPRS standard, however not UMTS. The Design with the Blackberry typical editing keyboard equipped 8800 orients itself at the Blackberry Pearl. The equipment held in black completely had brought RIM in the past summer on the market.

Hmm, RIM is a "he."

"Persons trusted with the procedures"- sounds cooler and a vague bit more conspiratorial than "sources say," right?

One lucky (though that may be a matter of dispute) eBay bidder now has a white BlackBerry Pearl headed his way.

He stepped up to the plate and forked over $1,025.00.

When I cite this type of info from forum posts on BlackBerryForums, Pinstack or Howard Forums, I generally consider the number of posts made by the source as well as reaction and challenges from other posters.
There's a ragin BlackBerryForums thread going on write now entitled, "How many would jump ship from the Perl (typo is the thread-starter's)to the 8800 when it's released?

The thread is only about 36 hours old, and already has some 60 posts and nearly 1,400 views.

Answers are about evenly divided between "hell no," "hell yeah" and "we'll see."

Most of the "hell yeahs" are from the QWERTY camp. You know, those who are OK with the Pearly 8100 in its current form factor, but by choice or habit, really want a QWERTY keypad device- with an included camera kind of nice but not the driving reason?

And what about you, BBHub reader? BlackBerry 8100 Pearl with camera, 8800 with camera, or something else?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Is BlackBerry 8800 actually out there in the wild?
When you enter http://www.blackberry8800.com, you get to a BlackBerry Pearl page.

Considering that the BlackBerry Pearl is the 8100 series, this makes me want to go "hmmm." Why is the view I am getting of the Pearl, with the 8800 URL still intact? Shouldn't I have been redirected to the main BlackBerry page?

First, a backgrounder. By now, we've established that the next major series of BlackBerrys will be the 8800. So it is not implausible that BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion would reserve that domain, and rather than place a "coming soon" holder, would employ what is called a "redirect" to the Pearl page.

But from what I can gather, this doesn't seem to have happened. The view here is not the same as the main, Flashed-up Pearl page.

When www.blackberry8800.com is entered, you see a Pearl main page view immediately. And I do mean immediately. There's not that quick "redir" in the browser's address line.

I looked at the source code for that "8800" page, and I don't see that either.

Then I thought of going to a WHOIS server and seeing what information I could find there. WHOIS is the Internet's registry of individuals and organizations that own specific domains, as well as relevant information about those domains.

First, keeping in mind that the BlackBerry Pearl is actually the BlackBerry 8100, I wanted to see what the real www.blackberry8100.com WHOIS server information revealed.

I got:

Note that Research In Motion's name is displayed, and Register.com is listed as the Registrar.

To see if this pattern held, I them performed a WHOIS search for www.discoverblackberry.com and then www.blackberrypearl.com.

Here's what discoverblackberry WHOIS showed:

Same obvious RIM ownership and Register.com domain service.

Then I performed a WHOIS search for www.blackberrypearl.com:

Same Register.com, but "Account Masking" is implemented. Given the name was registered on July 14, 2006- just short of two months before the Pearl was officially announced- the "Masking" might have been done by RIM to keep sleuths off the trail.

But when I executed a WHOIS search for www.blackberry8800.com, now that's when things got really interesting.

Look at this:

Notice something?

OK, three things.

First, this registration is private, rather than "masked," as the blackberrypearl.com is.

Second, this registration isn't through Register.com, but with 1&1 Internet (which happens to be my domain registrar for my own site). Not that it wouldn't be unthinkable for RIM to use two registrars, but why switch now?

And if this is just a simple redirect- would RIM use two different domain name registrars for two Web addresses that presumably are joined at the hip?

I next tried TraceRoute, and saw a completely different string between www.blackberry8800.com and www.blackberrypearl.com.

I'm not a TraceRoute expert. Maybe one of you who is knowledgeable about TraceRoute can peform a quick contrast search ebtween 8800 and one of the other domains- and let us know what is going on?

The answer to this can be simple and quite innocent, but up until I have these questions answered, I'm scratching my head and am wondering.

And when I wonder, I posit scenerios.

That's part of what I get paid to do around here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
