Boxwave Armor Case - A Very Protective Case

Boxwave's Armor Case for the 8700 is a good case to keep your BlackBerry safe.

Pros
- It is a hard case that should be able to help protect your BlackBerry
Cons - The keys around the edges can be harder to get to, as well as the escape button. There is no sleeper function.
Price - $29.95 via Boxwave website
Rating - 4 of 5 stars

This is a very solid case. I had no trouble slipping the BlackBerry in the case. It fits snugly, but doesn't seem to be too tight. There is black foam lining the inside to protect the Blackberry from scratches and ensure a snug fit.

The clip is removable. It screws into the back of the case so if you want to be clip free there is not a knob on the back for the clip to hook on to.

BBHub #2 most-read post of year: remember the pre-8700 excitement?

I've been counting down the ten most-read BBHub posts of 2006.

According to our server logs, #2 was "Rumor: BlackBerry 8700 to be released within weeks." Clicking the Read link below this post will get you to there.

When this post first went up on September 12, 2005 (yes, '05 not '06) the existence of the 8700 was pretty widely known but not yet formally announced by BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion. This post did a lot to fan the flames.

Even after the 8700 was released, readers kept going back to this post. That's why it was read more times than all but one post in 2006.

Tomorrow, New Year's Eve, we'll let you know what the most-read BBHub post of 2006 was.

User dread: red LED dead?

BlackBerry 8700g user and BlackBerryForums.com Member Jaime says just that in his new thread that he has entitled, Red LED on Missed Calls." (Link below this post).

"I think that I lost that feature (maybe never had). When I miss a call, I would like to have the red led flashing, just like incoming email," he writes. "How can I do that?"

"Edit the profile for it and change the repeat notification to LED," advises fellow BBForums Member dkf747, otherwise known as "Talking BlackBerry Encyclopedia."

Yes, dkf747, but Jaime's already tried that.

"Is not working," writes Jaime in a follow-up post. "I tried before with no luck. Any clue?"

Kind of stumped on this one, BBHub readers. What's should Jaime do about his apparently dead red LED?

Here's Our Number #7 Most-Read Post Of Year:8700 specs

I've been counting down the ten most-read BBHub posts of 2006.

According to our server logs, #7 was "More BlackBerry 8700 Pics-Specs Here."

If you think this one goes back awhile, well, you would be right. I first posted this back on September 12, 2005, at a point the 8700 was widely acknowledged but not officially confirmed.

Still this post garnered enough page views this year to make our 2006 list.

Taiwan Mobile annouces BlackBerry costs, fees

Taiwan Mobile has announced fees for their BlackBerry services.

Currently offering the BlackBerry 7290 and BlackBerry 8700g, monthly fees will range fromNT$899 (US$28) to NT$1,799.

The company will offer the BlackBerry 7290 and 8700g handsets for sale at NT$7,990 (US$245) and NT$12,990, respectively.

For NT$899 a month, a subscriber of the service can transfer up to 2MB (megabytes) of data with additional data transfers charged NT$0.15 per KB (kilobyte), according to TWM. The NT$1,799 plan allows for unlimited data transfer, noted the company.

Overseas roaming will operate this way: 40% off in the seven countries that are members of the Bridge Mobile Alliance, of which TWM is a member; 20% off in the US for T-Mobile users and 50% off for Cingular users; in China, NT$0.23 discounted per KB for users of China Mobile.

Ooly 2,000-3,000 handsets are initially available for sale, TWM president Harvey Chang said. But he added that enough BlackBerrys would be available to serve an anticipated 10,000 BlackBerry subscribers within a year to year and a half.

MyFaves only on Pearl? hah! what about these FIVE MyFaves on 8700 pix?

Pinstacker n8dbb - he of more than 4,100 posts-has heard all the talk that the T-Mobile MyFaves program is only available for the T-Mobile BlackBerry Pearl.

But then again, maybe not. He has a Pinstack thread up with five pix of MyFaves being set up, and then running on a T-Mobile BlackBerry 8700g.

Methinks you want to see them.

Methinks you want to click.

India-based Hutch now offers three BlackBerry models

Just this morning, India telecom provider Hutchinson Essar announced that it would be carrying BlackBerry for its more than 22 million customers.

Initially, Hutch- which the name it does business under- will be offering the BlackBerry 8700g, BlackBerry 7130g and BlackBerry 7290. The emphasis will be on Hutch's enterprise customers, a press rlease issued by Hutch and BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion said.

A Pearl launch is expected soon, but the Hutch gave no date for that.

Eight "Known Issues" Reported in BlackBerry OS 4.1 release 529 for 8700

Rare it is, you know, that any software rev is built without at least a few Known Issues- generally minor bugs that deemed inconsequential enough not to delay release.

Such is the case with BlackBerry OS 4.1 release 529 for the BlackBerry 87xx series.

In a post I put up on Saturday, you may have read about what has been fixed in this rev. Remember the old line, "accentuate the positive?"

But if you want to know what Known issues are in the "529," you can either read the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center document linked to the Read prompt at the bottom of this post- or just simply follow along with us here:

New BlackBerry document describes OS 4.1 upgrade for BlackBerry 8700

The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has posted an 11-page PDF document listing the changes within the BlackBerry OS 4.1.0.377 Release and the build 4.1.0.529 release for 8700 series devices.

You'd think the changes would be minor but then you would be wrong.

One key Functional change is that if your wireless provider is Cingular and you have enabled PIN1 SIM security you are now able to initiate an emergency call from the PIN1 code prompt.

The next changes the document describes are in Ring tines and Address Book.

Ring tones

SDR68878- Previously, if you were using a BlackBerry 8700 Wireless Handheld™ and you set the ring tone volume to high, the actual volume might have been much lower than the volume heard during a preview of the ring tone.
SDR66253- Previously, the quickbell MIDI ring tone might not have played.
SDR61653- Previously, if you tried to play the Cingular ring tone, your device might have reset after playing the tune for a few seconds.

Address Book

SDR85817- Previously, if you tried to copy a phone number from your address book to the SIM card phone book, your device might not have responded.

SDR60878-Previously, you might not have been able to open your SIM address book while Fixed Dialing Number mode was turned on.

Hey, but what about the Phone itself?

Glad you asked. Lots of changes:

Features To Expect In The 4.2 OS For The 8700

Curious what to expect when the 4.2 OS becomes available for the 8700?

Here are a few of the new features that one Pinstacker expects to see:

  • You can load and play video, but remember there is limited room inside your 8700
  • Radio Bee and podcasts will work
  • Photo Caller ID
  • Voice Notes
  • Ability to turn off data services while the voice still works
  • BlackBerry Maps
  • Ability to set a different tune for each email account in profiles
  • Browser Preview Mode
  • Email pictures directly from your BlackBerry
  • No limit on the size of pictures sent via BlackBerry Messenger

I am sure I am missing some, so feel free to add more.

Cingular site offers BlackBerry Pearl comparison with 8700c and 7130c

Pugwal, who is one of Robb's readers at RIMarkable has dug up a comparison chart on the Business section of the Cingular site that compares the features and specs of the "BlackBerry Pearl" vs. the BlackBerry 8700c and BlackBerry 7130c.

Follow along and I will show you most of the chart, and the specs:

Cool BlackBerry 8700 theme pack

I hear some of you out there right now:

"What? A post that isn't about the Cingular Pearl?"

Well yea. We break our concentration on obsession with the forthcoming availability of the Cingular BlackBerry Pearl to tell you about BlackBerry Theme Central's new 8700 theme pack.

Eight themes. $10, or $9 with a Club Handango Membership.

BlackBerry 8700 4.2 OS Leaked

Surfing Pinstack I came across a very interesting post about OS 4.2 for the 8700. Slash1guitar had a version of 4.2 and was willing to share.

First, this is available because he posted it, so it is not on an official website of RIM or your carrier. Only try if you are comfortable and have backed up your device. This is probably a beta version, that means there are bugs, and lots of them.

Please make sure you back up your BlackBerry before you try to install this. Nothing is worse than losing everything.

Let us know what you find, good or bad if you try. I am going to play with it and see what I think of it.

Pearl in your Cingular store this Tuesday? Oh, sure

Well, we do know that BlackBerry and Cingular's Pearl should be announced and available by this coming Tuesday, 11/21.

Yea, my ass-ent is not available for that proposition.

Let me tell you why.

Why? Because, as we saw with the huge inefficiences involved in the clumsily handled Cingular BlackBerry 8700C rollout, Cingular'd distribution network is a mess.

So unalike T-Mobile's, where the Pearls got to most of the stores on time, and with not too many exceptions, they were there and available for sale that very morning of rollout, September 12 of this year.

But based on Cingy's track record of chucked-up distribution- especially to retail, I am far more than skeptical they are going to be able to meet these goals.

My sense of this impending problem is heightened by all the advance reports you are sending me.

Unlike T-Mobile- where store owners and even individual store clerks knew all about the Pearl, had Pearl's under lock and key and executed launch day swimmingly, it seems that a lack of communication bordering on cluelessness and chaos about the Pearl rule the day in Cingular stores and in their retail channel.

What's worse, if these units aren't in the stores on Tuesday, you have the logistical challenges of pushing this product through the distribution chain over a four-day holiday weekend. I'm not sure Cingular is up to this. I mean, they haven't given me proof that they are.

Want proof? Turn the page and I will replicate my post in which I described how utterly incompetent Cingular was with the BlackBerry 8700c launch.

Really nice Otter Box BlackBerry 87xx case coming soon

There's also going to be sealed access to the keypad, scroll wheel, escape, power and mute buttons, as well as the programmable side button.

Oh and the screen cover. Did someone say screen cover?

Come along. I'll tell you and show you as well.
