Customers can now enjoy the benefits of these new features for the BlackBerry Pearl together with easy-to-use phone, email, organizer and browser applications - all in an incredibly small, light and stylish handset.

The BlackBerry Pearl from Cingular operates on the nation's largest digital voice network - with the fewest dropped calls of any national wireless carrier - and Cingular's nationwide(2) EDGE network, the largest national high-speed wireless data network in the U.S.

The BlackBerry Pearl is the first BlackBerry handset to come with a digital camera, multi-media capabilities and an expandable memory slot, while continuing to provide the full BlackBerry experience that is widely popular throughout the world. Beneath its sleek and stylish exterior, which measures just 4.2" x 1.97" x .57" and weighs only 3.1 ounces, the BlackBerry Pearl from Cingular is a quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled mobile application powerhouse delivering the fast performance of the latest generation BlackBerry handset platform. The built-in 64MB flash memory is now expandable with a microSD card, giving users plenty more storage for music, pictures and videos.

"The BlackBerry Pearl from Cingular provides a winning combination of business and entertainment-related applications that make it a great device both for work-time and leisure-time use," said Jeff Bradley, vice president, business data services, for Cingular Wireless. "The iconic yet highly functional design, popular BlackBerry service, and rich music and video features coupled with our Cingular-exclusive capabilities make this a powerful offering that will play well equally in the enterprise and consumer spaces."

"The BlackBerry Pearl is a breakthrough handset that looks as great as it performs. We believe this amazing new phone will attract an even broader range of mobile customers toward BlackBerry and we are delighted to be launching the BlackBerry Pearl with Cingular today," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "The BlackBerry Pearl is truly changing the mobile communications landscape by delivering the unparalleled BlackBerry experience that has become so popular around the world together with new multimedia features and Cingular's powerful Push to Talk service - all in an exceptionally small, sleek and stylish design."

Cingular-exclusive Features

Unique features of the BlackBerry Pearl from Cingular include Cingular's Push to Talk service and the availability of TeleNav GPS Navigator(TM) for turn-by-turn driving directions.

Cingular boasts the largest Push to Talk network in America and its PTT service includes several differentiating features, including "availability" icons, quick group calling and the ability to easily switch a PTT session to a regular wireless voice call. BlackBerry Pearl customers can use the Cingular Push to Talk service to stay connected with individual colleagues or friends, or set up groups for broader communication. The PTT button on the left side of the BlackBerry Pearl easily facilitates each PTT call. In addition, the Cingular service offers standard PTT features such as call waiting, contact alerts, and voice messaging to anyone in their contact list.

Cingular customers can receive GPS turn-by-turn voice and on-screen driving directions on the BlackBerry Pearl with TeleNav GPS Navigator(TM) (Bluetooth GPS Receiver accessory required). TeleNav GPS Navigator can be used in vehicles or while walking and offers colorful 3D moving maps. Just like an in-car navigation system, the 3D maps turn, move and stop as the vehicle does the same, while also displaying a realistic image of the streets the vehicle is approaching and streets they are passing.

Users can also pan and zoom the map to view surrounding streets. Other features include Biz Finder, allowing users to look up a business or place of interest, and Fuel Finder, providing nearby locations with the lowest gas prices.

The BlackBerry Pearl from Cingular is also the first wireless device in the U.S. to include TeleNav Maps(TM), a free application providing access to non-GPS static maps and step-by-step written driving directions.

Exceptional Phone Quality

The BlackBerry Pearl delivers exceptional phone quality with premium, easy-to-use phone features including Speaker Independent Voice Recognition for Voice Activated Dialing (VAD), support for polyphonic, mp3 and MIDI ring tones, and intuitive call management features such as smart dialing, conference calling, speed dialing and call forwarding. It also features a speakerphone and Bluetooth(R) 2.0 for use with hands-free headsets and car kits. BlackBerry Desktop Manager synchronization via Bluetooth is also supported.

The unique "push-based" BlackBerry service features a helpful Setup Wizard and gives users synchronized access to both personal and corporate email accounts with attachment viewing and the ability to manage multiple accounts while on the go. The BlackBerry Pearl also comes with an enhanced version of RIM's SureType(TM) QWERTY keypad technology that makes typing messages and dialing phone numbers quick and easy. The handset is supported on BlackBerry(R) Internet Service as well as BlackBerry(R) Enterprise Server, with a new set of IT policy controls on the latter to allow IT departments to manage camera and expansion memory usage per their corporate policies.

Images appear incredibly vivid and crisp on the BlackBerry Pearl's large, ultra-bright, high resolution (240 x 260) display. Built-in light-sensing technology automatically adjusts the screen and keypad brightness for optimum viewing in outdoor, indoor or dark environments. Along with an intuitive Cingular-exclusive user interface, the BlackBerry Pearl also features a supple, responsive trackball that makes vertical and lateral scrolling fast and easy. Dedicated "menu" and "escape" keys on either side of the trackball, along with context sensitive menus, make navigation instinctive, smooth and true to the BlackBerry experience.

Camera, Music, Video

Featuring a 1.3 megapixel camera with built-in flash and 5x digital zoom, users can snap a picture and instantly share it with friends and family by email(3), MMS or BlackBerry Messenger. Photos can also be set as caller ID images, and can be easily transferred between the handset and a computer using the included USB cable.

The BlackBerry Pearl comes with a media player and includes a stereo headset jack, so users can enjoy their favorite music and videos on the go. Music and video clips are delivered with rich sound and vivid color and can be easily loaded onto the handset via a new version of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager that is included on a CD in the box. MP3 and ACC music files and MPEG4 and H.263 video files are supported.

With the BlackBerry Pearl from Cingular, users can wirelessly access their email and other data, and browse the Web in more than 13,000 cities and towns, and along some 40,000 miles of major highways throughout the U.S. They can also take their BlackBerry Pearl with them when traveling abroad to make phone calls in more than 190 countries and access data in over 115 countries worldwide(4).

Pricing and Availability

The BlackBerry Pearl from Cingular is available for as low as $199.99 with a two-year commitment and after rebates, beginning tomorrow in select Cingular retail stores, on www.cingular.com and through Cingular's B2B sales organization, and in most Cingular stores nationwide by Monday, December 4.
Pinstacker N8DBB wasn't "horsing around" when he took his BlackBerry Pearl out <strike>to Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville </strike>in Louisville on Saturday.

Update: A BBHub reader from Louisville challenges the authenticity of these photos. He says they are not of Churchill Downs. Last night, N8DBB wrote me to confirm that this was a case of mistaken identity.

The actual Churchill Downs, just a few miles from this photo, was a far busier place tha what you are looking at here.

That's where the Breeders Cup was held on Saturday.

<strike>Bet (pun intended) you didn't know this about Churchill Downs. There's more than one track on the grounds</strike>.

Fulfilling the "road less traveled," N8DBB went to a scene less traveled, and took two BlackBerry Pearl shots. You are already looking at one. Even tho it is not of Churchill Downs, the scene has its own quality. Restfulness, for one.

And another.

The scene is so peaceful, it's difficult for me to imagine thundering hooves.

But it is not difficult for me to image you sending me your Pearl shots at russjourn@gmail.com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Australian tech journalist writes useful BlackBerry primer

Although I strongly get the sense that most of you BBHub readers already own a BlackBerry and/or are thinking about buying a specific model, I also understand that more than a few of you are new to BlackBerry and would like a basic introduction to what BlackBerry is, and does.

For that , I'd refer you to a newly posted Gorog's Guide article entitled "Berry Nice!."

Writer Danny Gorog, who reports on technology for the Melbourne, Australia Herald Sun and can be heard weekly on Radio Australia as well, concentrates on the basics of several BlackBerry models currently available in that nation.

Danny, who emailed me last night to tell me a bit about his work, talks about the features and differentiating capabilities of the BlackBerry 7100, 7200 and 7250.

In a more recent review, Danny took a look at the BlackBerry 8707v from Vodafone.
"I jet out of the front of the store to my car just to realize that I had from the front of the store to my car dropped my precious 7100i," writes HowardForums member b2k380. " I got back out of the car while getting drenched and found her laying face down in a puddle of water and getting rain pounded out of her back."

Note how b2k380 calls his 7100i "she." Or whatever.

"I knew she was toast but tried anyway, it worked but i still took it to Nextel and they sent me a new one," he writes, (but) today while attempting to charge her something seemed wrong I have had it on the charger and it seems to be full but when i look on the status page it says 80%, it went up to 85% then back to 80% while still on charge. Should i go ahead and get a battery now or what its not fully charging or at least it doesnt seem to be... "

Two fellow Ho-Fo'ers have advice for b2k380. Remember, there but for fortune go you or I..

"You need to drain the battery all the way down until the blackberry shuts off and then charge it back up," Mythmbhurts writes. "This will train the charging system and resync it so it knows what 0% is and what 100% is... If this does not work replace the whole unit as I had this problem before and it was something wrong with the charging circuit."

Chinasaur is next up with some advice.

"When it gets wet, you pop the battery out and LEAVE it out for days," he suggests. "Consensus seems to think 3-4 days is adequate..maybe a day earlier if you've had a fan on it constantly.

"The device has to dry completely."

Three or four days..exercise patience and grace, B2k380.

Ever heard of a company called SIRF Technology Holdings, Inc.?

No, I didn't think you did.

They specialize in Global Positioning System chips, such as those used in the BlackBerry7520 andBlackBerry7100i.

Seems like SIRF had areal bad day on Wall Street yesterday- dipping as much as 13% on the face of investor disillusionment at slowearnings forecasts offered by the San Jose, Calif. based company yesterday.

Now what should BlackBerry users make of this, especially since SIRF also makes GPS chips for Garmin, Motorola aswell as General Motors' OnStar service?

Perhaps a general assumption that orders might be down because most everyone who wants a GPS-enabled device-BlackBerry or no- already has one?

Hmm, maybe we are too early in the upgrade cycle for those GPS users to feel compelled about replacing theirunit?

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TELUS tells us: yes, finally the BlackBerry 7100i is here

BBHub reader Derek Ethier is frustrated that the long-promised Telus BlackBerry 7100i hasn't arrived yet, and isstill in the(bad pun alert) "ether."

"There seems to be some kind of hold-up on the release of the 7100i in Canada (by Telus) and given the amount of time it's been out in the US, itseems a little strange," he wrote me last night.

"I'm just trying to raise some kind of awareness in order to force Telus into doing or saying something,"Derek adds. "My corporate representative has been useless."

(hmm, now that's a first, wise-ass blogger thinks to self)

Derek said that because the situation is "frustrating as hell, so I thought I'd give it (contacting BBHub) a shot."

I've found an interesting Howard Forums thread in which a reader writesfrom a "somewhat rural area" he has traveled to with his BlackBerry 7100i, but with no charger to keep thepower in his BlackBerry up to snuff.

"I left home for the week-end, (100 miles), with my somewhat new BB 7100i, (haven't bought any extras yet),and I forgot to grab the AC charger on the way," writes Rick-o in the thread he's started called "Help! SlightEmergency with 7100i."

"After noticing I was without the charger, I thought I was ok since I wascoming back home Sunday afternoon and figured the battery would hold up long enough to get back on the charger,"he adds. "Well, come to find out, I'm now stuck away from home until tuesday, with no way to charge myphone."

And without any carrier stores around, the reader wants to know if there is something - anything- he can pick upthat will rev up his 7100i should the power drop real low.

Member Turbo993 offers a couple of suggestions, but then it seems that Rick-o found his own. In some store, hefound a $19.99 Belkin carcharger, one made by a company called Talkworks.

And just in time, apparently.

"My BlackBerry was down to 0% this afternoon, but was still functioning," Rick-owrites. "How's that for cutting it close?"

To which I say, I bet the next time Rick-o hits the road, he packs up his BlackBerry charger.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Telmap Navigator now available for BlackBerry 8700

Several security experts think that because of the increasing number of smartphone users as well as the comparativeease of spreading viruses across these platforms, that smartphone security will be tested this year.

Attacks on smartphones haven't reached the critical mass needed but it will happen sooner rather thanlater," antivirus firm Kaspersky Lab CEO Eugene Kaspersky, tells RedHerring.

"Mobile phone attacks scale very well for fraud," Internet Security Systems chief technology officerChris Rouland also tells the publication.

"Phone viruses are propagating quickly and they have only been gated by the fact that there are not enoughsmartphone users today," he told the magazine.

Rouland added that because phone carriers would likely have to bear the $100-per-incident cost of cleaning infectedhandhelds, only a few hundred infected phones are enough to cause a problem.

Yet network security executive Simon Klalaf disagrees. The Vernier Networks CEO tells Red Herring that thefinancial incentives that spur malware writers to develop viruses are not there for smartphones.

"Putting a worm on laptops where the objective is to steal financial or personal data is a bigger problem foreveryone," he tells Red Herring.

Boris Boege of Skylab Mobile Systems writes to tell me that theirGPS mapping tool "Spot for Blackberry" now supports all Bluetooth enabled Blackberry devices in combinationwith a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Former versions were only compatible with BlackBerry 7520 and BlackBerry 7100i. Both of thosemodels have an integrated GPS receiver.

Now, Spot for BlackBerry has been rev'd to support the BlackBerry 7100 Series, the BlackBerry 8700 Series as wellas the BlackBerry 7250 and BlackBerry 7290.

"Spot for Blackberry" costs $49. A time limited demo version is available free for download.

On the RIM section of the Howard Forums mobile phone site, I have been tracking this new thread called 7100t onRogers Wireless. It was originally made for T-Mobile, but has now been unlocked.

Forum Member hi09 wishes he could say "hi" on his 7100t. But he started the thread because calls cannotbe completed. He thinks the problem is his SIM card.

But then jase88 gets on the case with a couple of posts that should, IMHO, get a hi-5 from hi09.

"It sounds to me like a provisioning issue--or the device doesn't like your SIM for some reason," jase88writes in part. He quickly comes back with a post that goes into more detail.

"Provisioning refers to how your account is setup at Rogers. Obviously you have no data feature on youraccount, as you're only getting GSM," jase88 continues. "This normally shouldn't affect the device forvoice calls, however it may be doing so in your case. I say this, as the Fido SIM (which apparently has a data featureenabled) seems fine...and it shows GPRS.

"Try calling Rogers and adding a data plan temporarily...orhave them add a 'pay-per-use" data' feature," he adds. "Then ask them to do a 're-push authorizations toswitch'. This may resolve your issue...

Permalink | Email this | Comments
