A string of unfortunate, successive events can lead to your ringtones being disabled on your BlackBerry Pearl.
That's according to a newly posted Knwoledge Base Support document on the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center.
Fortunately, the problem only seems to occur in one scenario-one which finds four steps being performed in sequence.
Ounce of prevention- so don't do what we are about to tell you crashes your ringtones.
Follow along and I will tell you what happens in this scenario:
-
The BlackBerry 8100 smartphone is connected to a headset.
-
An MP3 file is playing on the BlackBerry 8100 smartphone.
-
You press the Send key to make a call to a contact in your Address Book. When the call begins, the MP3 file pauses.
-
When the call is ended, you press the End key. The MP3 file resumes, but no sound can be heard on the BlackBerry 8100 smartphone, including the ring tone from incoming calls.
After this scenario, the MP3 file resumes, but no sound can be heard on the Pearl.
Hey that stucks.
In addition, no ring tone can be heard when you make a call or receive a call.
Not good either.
The only workaround is to remove and re-insert the battery. And then if you are like me, pace nervously until that confangled hourglass goes out.

1. I purchased a Pearl from T-Mobile on the day of its release, and had a similar issue in that all ringtones stopped playing after a couple of weeks (on my phone, when making calls, etc). I did not, however, ever perform the steps detailed above. Brought the unit back to T-Mobile and they replaced with a new Pearl, which worked fine for about 24 hours before having the exact same problem. Now I've got an 8700, which works great, but I definitely miss my Pearl.
