RIM announces BlackBerry Enterprise Server for MDS Apps

Research In Motion has just announced BlackBerry Enterprise Server for MDS Applications, an offering the BlackBerry-maker says will give organizations the ability to mobilize applications and run them independent of wireless email should they decide to do so.

"Demand for wireless email continues to spread, but corporate and government customers now also require a robust wireless platform that can support an array of applications beyond email," RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said this morning in a statement. "BlackBerry Enterprise Server for MDS Applications is an important new product that will allow organizations to mobilize their existing systems and boost productivity for whole new groups of users that rely on applications such as field service, sales force automation, CRM, healthcare, transportation, logistics and SAP."

The company said the key benefits of BES/MDS will be:

  • Extension of applications to mobile workers without email accounts;
  • Carriers can offer hosted wireless applications such as field service automation- without needing to host email;
  • The same degree of secure-push-based technology and architecture as found in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server flagship product;
  • Developers will have the ability to extend virtually any type of enterprise application to a BlackBerry device, using a variety of options that include standard Web development tools, the BlackBerry Java Development Environment,  as well asBlackBerry MDS Studio with BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server for MDS Applications is being previewed at this Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2006 in Orlando, FL this week. RIM says the offering will be available later this year.
