Malaysia-based Maxis Communications Bhd - which has recently added the BlackBerry 8700g- says they hope to sell 7,000 BlackBerry handsets this year.
That would represent a doubling of 2005's 3,500 units sold.
Maxis chief operating officer Edward Ying tells Keith Hiew of Malaysia's Star Online a reason for this optimism is a broadening of the marketing effort from senior execs at key accounts to staffers at all levels.
"Previously, we were targeting the BlackBerry at senior executives of our client companies, such as Coca-Cola, British American Tobacco and Genting," Ying says. "Now, we hope to market the new model to the lower-ranked employees of these companies as these are part of an existing market."
