My duh for missing this before, but Mark Rejhon, who has written the BlackBerry FAQ on BlackBerry Forums, has posted download links to two free BlackBerry utilities he has written. That's Mark on the right.

Quick Note via BlackBerry offers one hotkey ("Q" key) access to notes, that can be automatically copied to the clipboard. "Good for taking notes in a mad hurry, such as writing down spoken information," writes Mark, who adds he believes this function is faster than using the BlackBerry MemoPad. This requires BlackBerry OS 3.6 or later.

Then we have Quick Compose via BlackBerry, which offers one hotkey ("C" key )access to immediately composing a new blank email message. "This reads the missing missing Compose shortcut icon from earlier BlackBerryOS software," Mark notes, "while using the new convenient New Email interface of OS 4.1."

Quick Compose requires Blackberry OS 4.1.
