According to 2005 figures released today by Gartner, BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion is now the worldwide market leader for PDAs.
Gartner numbers show that RIM shipped 3.2 million BlackBerrys in 2005, up 46 percent from 2.2 million units in 2004. Meanwhile Palm PDAs finished second, declining by 25.6 percent.
The Palm numbers, though, don't include smart phones such as the Treo 650, which shipped 1.95 million units in 2005 compared to 950,000 in 2004. Neither do the PDA numbers include the BlackBerry 7100 series, which like the Treo, are regarded by Gartner as primarily voice handsets rather than devices for data such as the BlackBerry 8700.
