On the Yahoo! BlackBerry User Group, Member bill says he has been having some problems charging his BlackBerry 7280 by plugging it into a PC-based USB. "I had a situation yesterday where I forgot to charge my 7280 the night before, so I grabbed a USB cable as I ran out the door expecting to be able to charge it at the office I was going to," Bill writes. "I was in a room with 20 Dell and EMachine computers and try as I might, none of them would charge the handheld."
Bill added that he charges his 7280 on his EMachines computer at home all the time, but nothing worked. He suspects the problem was these machines didn't have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager (at right) installed and as a result, didn't have the right drivers for the handheld.
Members C. Mark Wagner and JT then posted correct analyses of Bill's problem.
"You are correct," JT wrote. "The driver for USB devices is installed with the Desktop Manager."
"With Windows XP Pro, you have to have the PnP (Plug and Play) drivers installed on the system in order for Windows XP to know that it has a RIM handheld plugged in and in need of
power," Wagner wrote.
As a matter of fact, he tells of a case where he had to sit around on vacation in a Florida Starbucks hotspot while waiting for the necessary code to be transferred from his work desktop system in Indiana.
More productive vacation time, we've all had.
